The app offers a classic Instagram-like experience, allowing users to upload up to four photos and videos of up to a minute in length.
To me, the classic Instagram experience is no videos, reels, ads, or tie-ins to any other social network. Just photos, a few optional filters, and a short description.
I doubt anything like that is out there, unfortunately.
Personally I use Bluesky and Mastodon to post photos and I'm happy with the experience and engagement I get. I have a Pixelfed account but I don't use it, I don't see a huge amount of value over just posting on the main app.

Pixelfed and Mastodon interoperate, so indeed there's no reason to use both.
