I regularly carry a pocket knife.

What's astounding to me, an American, is that my doing so in England could put me in prison for four years.

Yeah. What's astounding to me, a Brit, is that you guys regularly get folks shot at school and/or work etc. but don't care enough to do anything about it.

Seems that Americans have, collectively, decided that their own right to carry a gun (and all the concomitant knock-on effects of that) supercedes other people's children's rights to life. Because no-one ever believes "it" will happen to them until it's too late.

Stabbings like this are vanishingly rare in the UK (although there's been a spurt of 3 of them recently) and mass shootings are measured as 1 or 2 per year since the country, collectively, said "fuck that shit, get rid of the guns" when we had one in a school. One. Every other week [1] there's another mass shooting in the USA. Perhaps wandering around armed to the teeth isn't the flex you think it is.

And even given all of that, I regularly walk around with a pocket knife in the UK, and it's completely legal - because it's less than 3 inches long and non-locking. You know what ? I haven't come across a situation where a non-locking 3" pocket knife is insufficient for what I want to use a pocket knife for...

    Only if

    * blade length greater than 3 inches, and

    * you lack any reasonable response as to why you are carry it, and

    * this happens repeatedly.

Once all the above occurs, you might be charged, you then have the opportunity to present your case and defend your actions, but only if a prosecutor looks at the details of the charge and decides to carry it forward.

To be sent to prison for four years (maximum) you would have also used that knife in a clearly threatening way that cannot be explained away by your defence lawyer. Even so, that is still unlikely to be awarded the maximum sentence, actual lunging and swiping with intent would probably be required.

Many people carry knives in the UK - Chefs frequently carry knife sets to and from work, for example.

It was a train originating in Doncaster and travelling on a Friday night, there’s an equal or greater chance it was a drunk and/or stoned white kid that calls everyone “bruv”.

Ahh… so that’s the sort of dipshit you’re following.

        • almosthere 5 hours ago

He is saying so little in the video and just letting people speak. Asking a leftist to engage with an argument is like asking someone to glue a smashed chicken egg back together.

Here is some words directly from a Muslim man's mouth: https://x.com/WallStreetApes/status/1984565359190638978

All the kings man and horses declared war on reality once more- as they had done when they declared war on economic reality, starving millions and deporting more. The madness of make believers.

          • yawpitch 3 hours ago

It’s kind of funny how hateful and batshit terrified you are at the same time.

And I’d be happy to glue that egg back together for you, except I’m still trying to figure out why you just smashed it all up in your own grill like that.

Well it was two men dressed in black that they arrested immediately and they called in a terrorism task force.

      • yawpitch 19 hours ago

“Men dressed in black” describes about half the ambulatory Doncastrian population after 3PM on a Friday afternoon, they often travel in small groups to try and at assemble at least one complete set of genitals between them, and the terrorism task force gets called out to just about any mass casualty event in the UK since 2007.

Leaping to (especially racist) conclusions isn’t helping anyone.

        • almosthere 19 hours ago

It's not racist, it's what's been happening there lately. The era of "don't be racist" when you're just recognizing things is fucking over.

          • yawpitch 19 hours ago

“Islam probably” is inherently racist, just as “Jews probably” was back in the ‘30s, the last time the era of “don’t be racist” was fucking over.

But, yeah, would-be Fascists jumping to “Islam probably” whenever there’s a crime in the UK has been happening lately… often in places like Doncaster.

            • tim333 7 hours ago

I'm not sure describing the behaviour of some religious group in inherently racist. What race is islam?

            • almosthere 18 hours ago

Well if I had started my comment with "Christians probably" a) far fewer downvotes for a thread that most people missed. b) People would be agreeing with me, for the most part, and c) it would have made zero sense.

As for "Jews Probably" show me a bunch of Jew lead terror attacks in germany that triggered WW2 - otherwise you're just calling everyone a nazi and a fascist again for no reason other than just trying not to be a "bad leftist".

              • yawpitch 18 hours ago

I can’t show you a bunch of Jew-“lead” (sic) terror attacks in 1920s-30s Germany because the vast majority of them only existed within the fevered imagination of the actual Nazis and Fascists of the day, much as the vast majority of Islamic-led attacks in the UK since 2007 exist only in the fevered imagination of the would-be Nazis and Fascists of today.

Having undoubtedly spent way more time in Doncaster and on that specific train line than you, and having actually been in the UK with a functioning memory of events here, and having been a victim of the actually extremely small amount of violent crime here, I’m going to assume that this very centrist is much more well-informed on the matter than an actually and demonstrably racist individual engaging in overtly fascistic rhetoric.

Start here and just roll down. Majority of incidents are Islamic related:

                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents_in...

There are a bunch of thwarted attacks too, here's one where an Islamic person was planning to attack London's Pride parade:

                  https://news.sky.com/story/mohiussunnath-chowdhury-extremely...

Also, this might help people in the future:

                  • yawpitch 15 hours ago

And, as expected, police have now announced it was two British nationals, neither of them obviously Islamic, and no apparent or suspected link to any form of ideological terrorism.

                    Islamophobe, probably.

                    • almosthere 10 hours ago

I guess we're just waiting for a 3rd arrest at this point, if he survives the knife wound, for spreading the "Allahu Akbar" rumor yesterday. He'll get 50 to life.

                    • hexbin010 14 hours ago

Not the white chavs you claimed either, so get off that high horse ;)

                      • yawpitch 14 hours ago

I made no claims whatever, I just said the odds were equal or greater than their baseless, pointless (and borderline-or-over racist) speculation.

                        • almosthere 10 hours ago

                          Yes you specifically did:

greater chance it was a drunk and/or stoned white kid

They have not yet released the religion of the people. They may never do that either, they're under a spell there.

                          • yawpitch 8 hours ago

No, I specifically didn’t, and apparently an inability to read English is amongst your other, let’s just say interesting, attributes.

When an ignorant idiot says “it was probably A” and then someone who actually knows the area says “actually, that’s the thinking of someone who is either ignorant or an idiot, because there’s an equal or better chance it was B” that someone isn’t saying “it was definitely B”, they’re saying the ignorant idiot is an ignorant idiot for assuming A… there’s also a significantly better chance it was C, D, E, or in the case of Doncaster and Peterborough several more letters up to W… my point in its entirety is that it takes an ignorant idiot to assume it was A.

Especially when it was not, in fact, someone motivated by Islam (or even a misreading of Islam). When this is all said and done it will almost certainly have been motivated by either alcohol, drugs, mental illness, or straightforward injured male pride, just like almost every other violent event in this country.

In more ignorant and idiotic countries he’d have had a gun. I’m glad I’ve moved somewhere he only had a knife, and most (if not all) of the injured will pull through.
